Edge ProtectionThe Handrails & Barriers That'll Keep You Safe
Close To The Edge?
Working on or near water presents obvious safety issues. Whilst our floating pontoons are sturdy enough to support even light plant machinery, unprotected edges would create a risk a person or equipment falling in the water.
That’s why, whenever reasonably practicable, fixed edge protection must be added to your floating pontoon.
Pontoon Edge Protection Options
There’s a range of edge protection options available with our pontoon hire. Handrails are fitted as standard, but you can add ropes, chains and debris netting to provide increased levels of security from slips and trips and dropped materials. To ensure equipment such as scaffold towers remains securely anchored to the platform, add mooring eyes and rings.
Take a look at some edge protection solutions that have helped our pontoon hire clients:
Lifebuoys & Rescue Lines
Lifebuoys and rescue lines should be positioned at intervals along your working area. Talk to us about your project and we’ll assess your lifebuoy and rescue line requirements and supply the required equipment, whether your floating pontoon system is staying fixed in one area, or needs to travel along a larger working area.
You should make daily checks to ensure that lifebuoys and lines are in their proper place. Consideration should also be given to positioning throw lines downstream depending on the flow of the water.
For added safety, ask us to include safety boats as part of your pontoon hire.
Edge Protection Systems
Choose from the following edge protection systems as part of your pontoon hire:
- Mesh barrier system (Combisafe)
- Key clamp
- Toe boards
- Debris netting
Floating Pontoon Surfaces
All our floating pontoons can be covered with materials ranging from carpet or artificial turf (typically for events) to ply board, providing the flat, unbroken surface that’s ideal for using beneath equipment. Other coverings are available on request.

Delivery, Assembly, Dismantling & Collection
All our floating pontoon systems can be delivered and installed virtually anywhere.
If vehicle access is limited or if there’s particularly soft ground, the modular pontoon can be split into individual, manageable floats that can be carried by hand and re-built on the water without any damage to the soft ground and surrounding area.
Construction of the modular pontoon system will include installation of your chosen edge protection system.
To plan your pontoon hire, talk to us about your requirements as early as possible in the planning phase. We’ll attend pre-start meetings and provide method statements and guidance to ensure that your floating pontoon delivers the scale, functionality and flexibility you need.
